South Lake Tahoe, CA (February 9, 2025) – A major crash on Highway 50 outside of South Lake Tahoe resulted in serious injuries to one individual, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The incident occurred when 54-year-old Joseph Gonzales parked his Nissan Rogue on the shoulder of Highway 50, west of Slippery Ford Road, to adjust his tire chains due to snowy road conditions. As Gonzales was working on his vehicle, 18-year-old Roland Pierce approached the area in a Subaru Impreza at a speed too fast for the slippery roads. Pierce lost control of his vehicle, striking Gonzales and sending him airborne. Gonzales landed on his back in the roadway before Pierce’s vehicle collided with the rear corner of the Nissan Rogue and subsequently hit the guardrail.
Gonzales sustained major injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Two other passengers in the Nissan were also injured and received medical attention for their injuries at the scene. Fortunately, all individuals involved in the crash remained on-site and cooperated with emergency responders upon their arrival.
Authorities have stated that impaired driving is not considered a factor in the crash. The snowy conditions and excessive speed appear to have contributed to the accident. The California Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into the incident.
Our thoughts are with Joseph Gonzales and the other injured individuals, and we hope for a swift and full recovery.
Winter Driving Hazards in California
Winter weather conditions pose significant hazards on California’s mountainous roads, particularly in areas like South Lake Tahoe where snow and ice can create treacherous driving conditions. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, thousands of accidents occur annually during the winter months, many due to drivers failing to adjust their speed and driving habits for the weather.
Common causes of winter accidents include driving too fast for conditions, failure to use tire chains when required, and loss of control on icy or snowy roads. Highways like Hwy 50, which are heavily trafficked by tourists and locals alike, become especially dangerous during snowstorms.
Drivers are urged to reduce speeds, maintain safe distances, and ensure their vehicles are properly equipped for winter conditions, including tire chains, winter tires, and emergency supplies.
Injuries from winter weather accidents can be severe, often involving head trauma, fractures, and internal injuries due to the sudden and violent nature of these crashes. Victims may face significant medical expenses, long recovery times, and lost income.
