South Burlington, VT (December 12, 2024) – Two pedestrians were seriously injured Wednesday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle on Shelburne Rd near the Interstate I-189 on-ramp. The crash occurred around 4:30 PM as the pair crossed the road at a painted crosswalk.

Police identified the driver as Jeffrey Fay, 61, of Richmond, who was entering the highway in a pickup truck when the collision occurred. The victims, April McMahon, 54, of St. Albans, and Todd Brissette, 61, of Burlington, were transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center in critical condition. Authorities described McMahon’s injuries as life-threatening.

Fay was uninjured and remained at the scene. Police have not filed charges, and the crash investigation is ongoing.

This stretch of Shelburne Rd, also known as Route 7, has been the site of numerous accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists in recent years, with six fatalities recorded since 2020.

Our thoughts are with the victims and their families, and we hope for their swift recovery.

Pedestrian Safety on Shelburne Rd in Vermont

Shelburne Rd in South Burlington is a busy thoroughfare, serving both local traffic and commuters. Unfortunately, it has seen an alarming number of pedestrian and cyclist accidents due to its high traffic volume and intersection complexities.

To enhance safety, transportation advocates have called for improved design measures, such as better lighting, traffic calming devices, and additional crosswalks. Drivers are urged to exercise heightened caution in pedestrian-heavy areas and to strictly adhere to traffic laws.

For individuals affected by pedestrian accidents, seeking immediate medical care and collaborating with authorities are essential. Additionally, understanding your legal rights can assist in addressing medical bills, insurance claims, and potential legal actions.
