Soper, OK (December 9, 2024) – A tragic crash in Choctaw County on Saturday night led to the death of 23-year-old Brittney Spalding, a passenger in a sedan involved in the collision. The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of US-70 and US-271, approximately three miles east of Soper. According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP), the sedan, traveling eastbound on US-70, turned left onto US-271 and pulled directly into the path of a westbound vehicle, resulting in a violent crash.

Spalding was pinned in the vehicle for approximately 20 minutes before emergency responders from Hugo Fire and Rescue were able to extricate her. She was then transported to a nearby hospital, where she was sadly pronounced dead. Both drivers involved in the crash, as well as all three passengers in the other vehicle, were treated at local hospitals for various injuries. Their conditions remain under evaluation, but none were reported to be in critical condition.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the cause of the crash. At this time, no further details have been released, though authorities suggest that factors such as visibility or driver attention could have played a role.

Our deepest condolences are extended to the family and loved ones of Brittney Spalding during this difficult time.

Fatal Accidents in Oklahoma

Fatal accidents like the one that occurred in Soper are a reminder of the risks present on the roads every day. Intersections, particularly those at high-speed roads like US-70, can be hazardous when drivers are not fully aware of the traffic around them. In this case, the sedan’s left turn into the path of the westbound vehicle resulted in the tragic loss of life.

According to Oklahoma Highway Patrol, intersection-related accidents are one of the leading causes of fatal crashes, often involving failures to yield or misjudgments about the speed or distance of oncoming traffic. This accident, like many others, underscores the importance of vigilance and caution when driving, especially when turning onto busy roads or highways.

Residents of Soper are encouraged to keep safety measures, such as seatbelts, at the forefront of their travel habits. The injuries sustained by those involved in the crash might have been more severe without the protection of these devices.
