Somerville, MA (December 22, 2024) – A tragic fire claimed the life of a woman Thursday afternoon near Alewife Brook Parkway and Broadway in Somerville. Authorities reported that the fire broke out in a wooded area where a small encampment was located shortly after 4 p.m.

Somerville firefighters arrived on the scene and stretched a hose from their engine tank to combat the flames. During their efforts, they discovered an unconscious woman. Despite their attempts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

“This was a very sad event, and our thoughts are with the victim right now,” Somerville Fire Chief Charles Breen stated.

Wood and debris near the encampment contributed to the fire’s rapid spread. Firefighters extinguished the main blaze within 10 minutes but remained on-site to address smoldering hot spots and assist with the ongoing investigation. Access to the encampment required crews to cut through a chain-link fence.

Police noted finding several “ignition sources” at the scene but stated that the fire appeared to be accidental. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is working to identify the woman and determine her cause of death.

We offer our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased victim.

Fire-Related Fatalities in Massachusetts

Fire-related deaths are devastating and often preventable. In Massachusetts, accidental fires are commonly linked to ignition sources such as unattended flames, flammable debris, or electrical malfunctions. Wooded areas and encampments can be particularly vulnerable due to the presence of combustible materials and limited access for emergency responders.

According to state fire data, Massachusetts experiences hundreds of fires annually, with a significant percentage resulting in injuries or fatalities. Preventative measures, including fire safety education and regular inspections of high-risk areas, are crucial in reducing these tragic incidents.

If you or someone you know has been affected by a fire-related incident, resources are available to provide support and guidance. It’s essential to stay informed about fire safety to protect lives and property.
