Sioux Falls, SD (October 12, 2024) – A serious incident occurred early Thursday morning, October 10 when an SUV crashed into an apartment building, injuring two individuals. The accident took place around 4 a.m. near the intersection of West 3rd Street and North Elmwood Avenue.
According to police reports, the SUV was traveling south on what some neighbors described as a makeshift alley. Witnesses expressed uncertainty about whether it was even a designated road. The vehicle collided with a balcony post before crashing through the wall of the apartment building.
Tragically, a 3-year-old boy was pinned against the wall after the SUV crashed through the apartment. “The SUV went through the wall, hit the couch, and the child was pinned between the couch and the wall. They were able to get him out of there. He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries,” stated Sam Clemens from the Sioux Falls Police Department. Fortunately, a 37-year-old man who was also in the apartment at the time sustained injuries but is expected to recover.
Witnesses reported seeing three individuals—two women and a man—exit the vehicle and flee the scene. At this time, the police have not identified the driver. Officers discovered open alcohol containers inside the SUV, which had been reported stolen on October 5. While there is no indication that the crash was intentional, the community remains shaken by the event. Neighbors described being awakened by the sound of sirens and crying, with some learning about the incident later in the morning.
“My biggest concern is that auto theft and stuff like this has been happening a lot more in Sioux Falls. I grew up in Denver and I know how bad Denver’s gotten,” expressed local resident Justin Gawell. “Seeing it happen in Sioux Falls actually concerns me.”
The investigation is ongoing, with police utilizing surveillance video and witness statements to gather more information. No arrests have been made yet, and the exact number of individuals involved in the hit-and-run is still under investigation.
If you have any information regarding this incident, you are encouraged to contact the Sioux Falls Police Department’s non-emergency number or leave a tip with Crime Stoppers at 367-7007 or through the P-3 Tips app.
