Sioux Falls, SD (October 22, 2024) – A tragic motorcycle accident occurred late Sunday night, resulting in the death of a young woman and serious injuries to a man. At approximately 11:48 PM on October 20, emergency personnel responded to the scene at the intersection of W. 95th St and S. Western Ave in southern Sioux Falls.
Upon arrival, officers discovered two individuals injured in the crash. Preliminary investigations revealed that a 2002 Harley Davidson Dyna motorcycle was traveling northbound as it approached the roundabout intersection. The motorcycle, occupied by an adult male and an adult female, failed to navigate the roundabout and subsequently crashed.
Both occupants were transported to a local hospital for medical care. Tragically, the female passenger was pronounced dead at 1:20 AM on October 21, 2024. She has been identified as a 29-year-old resident of Sioux Falls, though her identity is being withheld pending family notification. The male operator of the motorcycle, a 30-year-old Sioux Falls resident, remains hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators noted that neither occupant was wearing helmets at the time of the crash. Speed and alcohol are currently being examined as potential contributing factors, and charges may be forthcoming depending on the outcome of the investigation.
As authorities continue their investigation, it is possible that the morning commute near the intersection of 95th and Western could be impacted on Monday, October 21, 2024. Students and staff heading to Harrisburg North Middle School and Endeavor Elementary School may need to travel in from the west on 95th St due to the ongoing investigation.
Traffic officers are handling the investigation, and a UAS/drone was utilized for aerial photography of the scene. It is the department’s policy to notify the public when drones are deployed for such purposes.
Our thoughts are with the families affected by this tragic accident.
