Sioux City, IA (February 6, 2025) – A school bus with the Sioux City Community School District was involved in a multi-vehicle accident Wednesday morning near 22nd St. on Business Highway 75. Fortunately, no major injuries were reported.
According to authorities, a minivan and an SUV were stopped, waiting to make a left turn onto 22nd St., when the school bus failed to stop in time and rear-ended the SUV. The force of the impact pushed the SUV into the minivan. The bus was carrying 20 students at the time of the crash, who were en route to Unity Elementary School just a few blocks from the scene.
The Sioux City Community School District released a statement confirming that a small group of students were checked for minor injuries at the scene, while the rest were transported to school via another bus. No significant injuries were reported among the drivers involved.
The bus driver, identified as 49-year-old Diana Porterfield, was cited for failure to stop at a clear distance.
Traffic was briefly reduced to one lane in the area as witnesses assisted in directing vehicles, but normal traffic flow has since resumed.
“It was really scary. The only thing that kept me from hitting my head or anything was my violin because I had it between my legs,” shared Chastity, a student who was on the bus during the accident.
Staying Safe Around School Buses
While no serious injuries were reported in this incident, accidents involving school buses can be alarming for both students and parents. It’s crucial to ensure that children are seated properly and personal belongings are stored securely to minimize potential harm during sudden stops or collisions.
For drivers, maintaining a safe following distance, especially around school buses, is essential to prevent accidents. Additionally, heightened awareness in school zones and residential areas helps safeguard students during their daily commutes.
