Shrewsbury, VT (November 11, 2024) – A tragic accident early Sunday morning claimed the life of a young driver on Cold River Road near Upper Cold River Road in Shrewsbury.
The Vermont State Police responded to the scene around 4:06 a.m., where they found a 2019 RAM 1500 had collided with a guardrail and subsequently struck a tree. The driver, 17-year-old Macy Piersiak of Needham, MA, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Preliminary investigations suggest the vehicle was traveling south when it crossed the centerline, left the roadway, and hit the guardrail before colliding head-on with a tree. No other occupants were in the vehicle, and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Emergency responders from the Shrewsbury Fire Department, Rutland City Fire Department, and Regional Ambulance Service assisted at the scene. Authorities confirmed that the road conditions were dry, and the weather was cloudy at the time of the accident. The crash remains under investigation by the Vermont State Police.

Teen Driving Accidents in Vermont
The loss of a young life in a motor vehicle accident is a heartbreaking reminder of the importance of road safety. Vermont experiences numerous crashes involving young drivers each year, often attributed to inexperience, fatigue, or loss of control. The winding rural roads in areas like Shrewsbury can present additional challenges, especially during low-visibility conditions or early morning hours.
Nationwide, teenage drivers are at a higher risk of fatal crashes compared to other age groups. According to recent statistics, speeding and lane departures are among the leading factors in single-vehicle accidents for drivers aged 16 to 19. Efforts to educate young drivers on defensive driving and situational awareness can be crucial in preventing such tragedies.
In Vermont, communities and law enforcement work together to promote road safety initiatives, particularly focusing on younger drivers. These programs aim to reduce risks through education and enforcement of traffic safety laws.
