Shingobee Township, MN (November 12, 2024) – Emergency responders were called to a serious pedestrian-involved accident late Monday night on Highway 371 near Shingobee Road. The incident occurred at approximately 11:57 p.m., involving a 2007 Honda Odyssey van and a pedestrian.
According to preliminary reports, the pedestrian, identified as 27-year-old Henry Delohn Guenthner of Walker, MN, was walking southbound along the traffic lane and fog line of Highway 371 when he was struck by the passenger side of the southbound van. The driver of the Honda Odyssey, 54-year-old Shannon Marie Ocken of Park Rapids, MN, was uninjured in the incident. The airbags in the vehicle did not deploy, and no alcohol was involved on the driver’s part.
Guenthner sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Sanford Hospital in Bemidji for medical care. Reports indicate alcohol was a factor for the pedestrian, which may have contributed to the accident. The road conditions at the time were dry, and the incident remains under investigation by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office and Minnesota State Patrol.
Our thoughts are with Mr. Guenthner as he recovers from this incident.
Pedestrian Safety in Minnesota
Minnesota roadways, particularly high-traffic routes like Highway 371, can present significant risks for pedestrians, especially at night or in low-visibility conditions. In 2023 alone, pedestrian-related crashes accounted for a significant portion of traffic injuries statewide, with alcohol frequently noted as a contributing factor.
This tragic incident highlights the importance of adhering to pedestrian safety guidelines. Pedestrians are urged to use sidewalks where available, wear visible clothing at night, and avoid walking along roadways when impaired. Drivers must also remain vigilant, particularly in areas without clear pedestrian infrastructure.
If you or a loved one has been involved in a pedestrian-related accident, navigating the aftermath can be overwhelming. From medical recovery to insurance claims, having the right resources can make all the difference.
