Santa Rosa County, FL (September 25, 2024) – A school bus was involved in a collision with a semi-flatbed truck on September 24, 2024, during the morning hours. According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the incident occurred at the intersection of Anderson Lane and Berryhill Road.
The FHP report indicates that the Student Transportation of Florida INC bus was stopped southbound in the left turn lane at the intersection when the semi-flatbed was making a left turn from Berryhill Road onto Anderson Lane. As the flatbed turned, it side-swiped the left rear of the bus. Fortunately, there were four children and the bus driver on board at the time of the crash, and none of them sustained injuries.
Following the collision, the semi continued north and left the scene, prompting an investigation by the FHP to locate the driver and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Our thoughts are with everyone involved in this incident, and we are relieved to hear that there were no injuries.
School Bus Accidents in Florida
While often alarming, school bus accidents are relatively rare considering the number of children transported daily in Florida. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), school buses are one of the safest forms of transportation for children. However, when accidents do occur, they can have serious implications for students, drivers, and the community.
In Florida, school bus accidents can involve various factors, including driver error, vehicle malfunctions, or other drivers’ negligence. It is crucial for drivers to be vigilant and adhere to traffic laws, especially around school zones and bus stops. Florida law requires drivers to stop when a school bus has its stop sign extended, ensuring the safety of children boarding or disembarking from the bus.
Parents and guardians should also be aware of safety measures to take when their children are riding the bus. These include:
- Ensuring children arrive at the bus stop on time.
- Teaching children to stay seated while the bus is in motion.
- Reminding children to wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching.
If you or someone you know has been involved in a school bus accident, it is essential to seek legal counsel. An experienced personal injury attorney can help navigate the complexities of the legal system and ensure that victims receive the compensation they deserve for any injuries or damages incurred.
