Santa Rosa, CA (October 7, 2024) – A tragic series of accidents unfolded Saturday afternoon in Santa Rosa, resulting in the death of a woman and multiple injuries. At approximately 2:05 p.m., the California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to reports of a road rage incident involving a Mazda SUV and a Volkswagen SUV on Stony Point Road.
According to CHP officials, the driver of the Mazda, identified as 20-year-old Diego Diaz Hernandez, intentionally rammed the Volkswagen, causing it to veer into oncoming traffic. This resulted in a collision with a Mercedes SUV traveling northbound. Inside the Volkswagen were a woman in the front passenger seat, an infant in the backseat, and a man driving. Tragically, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while the man and infant were transported to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with major injuries. The occupants of the Mercedes also sustained major injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment.
After the initial crash, Hernandez allegedly fled the scene. Approximately ten minutes later, CHP officers received another report of a crash on US-101 southbound, south of Pepper Road, where the Mazda was reported to have repeatedly rammed another vehicle.
Diego Diaz Hernandez has since been arrested and is facing multiple charges, including murder. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding these incidents is ongoing.
