Santa Cruz County, CA (September 30, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred early Friday morning, resulting in the death of an 82-year-old woman. The incident took place around 5:50 a.m. on Opal Cliff Drive, east of Court Drive, when an e-bike struck Helen “Pookie” Hines.
According to the California Highway Patrol, an 80-year-old man was riding his white Aventon Pace 500 e-bike on the right shoulder of Opal Cliff Drive at an unknown speed when he collided with Hines, who was walking in the same direction. The impact led to severe injuries for Hines, who was subsequently airlifted to Valley Medical Center. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital.
The cyclist was also injured in the crash and was transported to Dominican Hospital by ground ambulance for treatment of unspecified injuries.
