Santa Barbara County, CA (January 19, 2025) – A tragic motorcycle crash off Highway 166 claimed one life and left another individual with major injuries on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred around 2:30 PM between Spanish Ranch and Chimineas Ranch, according to Cal Fire SLO and Santa Barbara County Fire.

Cal Fire fire captain Eric Carreiro reported that the crash involved a single motorcycle carrying two riders. Firefighters and emergency personnel arrived on the scene to find the motorcycle off the roadway. One individual was pronounced deceased at the scene, while the other suffered significant injuries. Emergency responders provided immediate care before transporting the injured patient to Marian Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Both Cal Fire SLO and Santa Barbara County Fire assisted at the crash site. California Highway Patrol (CHP) has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident. Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the deceased, and our thoughts are with the injured rider during their recovery.

Motorcycle Safety in California

California’s highways, including routes like Highway 166, are popular for motorcycle riders due to their scenic views and open stretches. However, motorcyclists face heightened risks compared to other road users, particularly on rural roads with curves and limited visibility.

Motorcycle crashes often result in severe injuries or fatalities due to the lack of protective barriers. Common causes include speeding, sharp turns, road debris, and driver inexperience. Riders are encouraged to wear protective gear, maintain a safe speed, and remain vigilant of road conditions to reduce risks.

For those involved in motorcycle accidents, seeking medical care, documenting the crash, and consulting with legal or insurance professionals are critical steps. Victims and their families may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, emotional distress, and other damages related to the accident.

If you or someone you know has been affected by a motorcycle accident, resources are available to guide you through the recovery process.
