Sandusky, OH (October 4, 2024) – An unfortunate incident occurred on the evening of October 2, 2024, when eight-year-old Zaiden Drennen was struck by a vehicle shortly after returning home from a local homecoming parade. The accident took place around 6:50 PM on Madison Street, near his home on Pearl Street.
Zaiden’s legal guardian, Shantavia Dixie, explained that after attending the parade, he walked out of their home when he was hit by a car. “I immediately ran across the street, and I saw him lying on the ground, so I freaked out,” Dixie recounted, highlighting the panic that ensued when she learned of the accident.
Witnesses reported that the driver did not stop after the collision, prompting immediate concern for Zaiden’s well-being. He was airlifted to a hospital in Cleveland, where he spent the night for observation and treatment. Fortunately, by the following evening, he was able to return home.
Dixie shared that Zaiden sustained bruises and scrapes but did not suffer any broken bones, expressing relief at his recovery. “He’s fine. He’s just like bruised up and sore,” she said, adding that she hoped he would heal within the next couple of weeks.
In the aftermath of the incident, Sandusky Police launched an investigation and released a photo of the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run. Within a day, they identified the driver as a teenage girl who reportedly did not have a valid driver’s license. Dixie expressed her disbelief at the driver’s actions, stating, “I don’t understand why they wouldn’t get out of the car and check on him or something like that… he was out there lifeless.”
The police are currently working on the official crash report, and it remains unclear what charges the driver may face as the investigation continues.
Our thoughts are with Zaiden and his family as they navigate the aftermath of this distressing event.
