Sampson County, NC (March 10, 2025) – Three people were transported to the hospital following a multi-vehicle collision involving an ambulance on Butler Island Bridge Rd on Saturday night. The crash occurred around 9:30 PM and led to significant road closures in the area.
According to investigators, an ambulance was traveling south when it attempted to turn around in the middle of a curve to respond to a call. As this maneuver was taking place, a Lincoln MK-S passenger car was heading north and exited a dark, sharp curve, colliding with the ambulance. The impact caused the ambulance to overturn, while the Lincoln sustained severe front-end damage on the passenger side.
Two crew members from the ambulance and the driver of the Lincoln were injured and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities confirmed that the ambulance did not have any patients onboard at the time of the accident.
For several hours, Butler Island Bridge Rd was closed between Haynes Stretch Rd in Sampson County and Ingram Rd in Cumberland County as investigators examined the scene and crews worked to clear the wreckage. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is leading the ongoing investigation, and no charges have been filed at this time. Our thoughts are with those injured, and we hope for their full recovery.
Emergency Vehicle Accidents in North Carolina
Collisions involving emergency vehicles like ambulances can be particularly dangerous due to the high speeds and quick maneuvers often required in emergency situations. North Carolina roads, especially those with sharp curves or limited visibility, can create hazardous conditions when sudden turns or stops are made.
Drivers are urged to use extra caution when traveling in areas where emergency responders may be operating. In situations where ambulances or fire trucks are stopped or maneuvering, it is crucial for other drivers to remain aware of their surroundings and reduce speed to prevent accidents.
When crashes like this occur, investigations typically focus on factors such as road conditions, visibility, driver reactions, and whether proper signals or warnings were used. Victims involved in these types of accidents may be entitled to seek medical and legal assistance to address injuries, damages, and other hardships caused by the crash.
