Sammamish, WA (February 20, 2025) – A Washington State Patrol (WSP) trooper took decisive action early Thursday morning to stop a wrong-way driver on Interstate 90, preventing a potentially catastrophic crash.
According to WSP, the incident began just before 4 a.m. when a driver entered I-90 at Interstate 405 and began traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes. The trooper, seeing the imminent danger, used their patrol SUV to make intentional contact with the vehicle near West Lake Sammamish Parkway, bringing it to a stop.
Traffic camera footage from the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) showed the trooper swerving back and forth in an attempt to align with the wrong-way driver, who also swerved in an apparent attempt to avoid the collision. At the moment of impact, both vehicles were traveling at approximately 60 mph.
Despite the high-speed crash, both the trooper and the driver sustained only minor injuries. The driver was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI).
The collision led to the closure of three left lanes of westbound I-90 for about an hour before the roadway was fully reopened.
Our thoughts are with those involved, and we are grateful for the trooper’s quick response in preventing further harm.
Wrong-Way Driving and DUI Accidents in Washington
Wrong-way driving incidents, like this one on I-90 near Sammamish, are among the most dangerous types of highway crashes. These accidents often result in severe injuries or fatalities, as head-on collisions at highway speeds generate immense force. Many wrong-way crashes occur due to driver impairment, fatigue, or confusion, particularly in the early morning hours when visibility is reduced.
Washington State Patrol actively monitors highways for potential wrong-way drivers and uses various strategies to prevent accidents, including alert systems, law enforcement intervention, and physical barriers at freeway entrances. Despite these efforts, wrong-way crashes continue to pose a significant risk, particularly when DUI is involved.
For victims of DUI-related accidents, the road to recovery can be challenging, with medical expenses, emotional trauma, and legal complexities adding to the difficulties. Seeking the right support and understanding legal options can help individuals navigate the aftermath of a serious crash.
