Salem, IN (September 24, 2024) – A tragic head-on collision occurred on Monday afternoon just east of Salem, resulting in the death of a southern Indiana woman and severe injuries to two others. The Washington County Sheriff’s Department and emergency personnel responded to the scene shortly after 5 p.m.
The accident took place on State Road 56, just east of Heritage Chapel Road, and blocked all lanes of the roadway. According to reports from Sgt. Carey Huls with the Indiana State Police, one driver, identified as 27-year-old Hanah Marie Davis of Scottsburg, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver, along with a passenger in their vehicle, was rushed to University Hospital in Louisville with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Department requested the Indiana State Police Sellersburg Crash Reconstruction Team to investigate the incident. Troopers Tate Rohlfing and Ben Davis arrived to assess the situation. Preliminary findings suggest that Davis was driving a red 2008 Toyota passenger car eastbound on SR56 when her vehicle crossed over the centerline and collided head-on with a westbound gray 2022 Jeep Gladiator.
The two occupants of the Jeep, also from Scott County, were transported to the hospital for treatment. The roadway remained closed for more than three hours as authorities conducted their investigation, with assistance from the Salem Fire Department and the Washington County Coroner’s Office.
