South Bay, FL (December 30, 2024) – Tragedy struck early Sunday morning as two individuals lost their lives in a fiery wrong-way collision on U.S. 27 near Clewiston. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the incident, which occurred at approximately 2:35 a.m. near Mile Marker 85.

A 2017 Ford Van, traveling north in the southbound lanes of U.S. 27, collided head-on with a 2023 Chevy Suburban. The driver of the van, whose identity has not yet been released, and Damion Jones, 24, of South Bay, the driver of the Suburban, were pronounced dead at the scene by Palm Beach County Fire Rescue. The collision was described as “violent,” and the van burst into flames after coming to rest in the northbound lanes.

The Chevy Suburban, carrying three passengers, came to a halt in the grass median facing north. Emergency responders transported the passengers to St. Mary’s Medical Center. One passenger, an unidentified male, remains in critical condition. Two others, Alt’Lecia Johnson, 23, of South Bay, and Fa’Quandria Nation, 24, of West Palm Beach, sustained serious injuries.

Authorities are actively investigating the circumstances leading to the wrong-way crash. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the families and loved ones affected by this heartbreaking incident.

Wrong-Way Collisions in Florida

Wrong-way collisions are among the most devastating types of traffic accidents, often resulting in severe injuries or fatalities due to the head-on nature of the impact. In Florida, these incidents are particularly concerning, given the state’s extensive highway network and high traffic volumes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that wrong-way crashes, while less frequent than other accident types, result in a disproportionately high fatality rate.

The stretch of U.S. 27 where this crash occurred is known for its long, rural sections, which can contribute to driver disorientation, particularly during nighttime hours. Factors such as impaired driving, fatigue, or confusion about road signage are common contributors to wrong-way incidents.

If you or a loved one has been involved in a serious collision, taking the following steps can be critical for safety and recovery:

  1. Seek Immediate Medical Attention: Prioritize health and safety, even if injuries seem minor at first.
  2. Document the Scene: If possible, gather evidence, such as photographs and witness information.
  3. Consult Legal Counsel: Navigating insurance claims and potential legal proceedings can be challenging. A skilled attorney can provide guidance and representation.
  4. Raise Awareness: Understanding the risks of wrong-way driving and advocating for improved road safety measures can help prevent future tragedies.
