Rochester, NY (November 27, 2024) – Two minors were detained following a stolen car chase and crash on Tuesday night, according to the Irondequoit Police Department. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. when officers responded to a call about two vehicles in a person’s yard, with individuals allegedly attempting to steal the resident’s car. Shortly after, officers spotted the vehicles— a black Kia SUV and a red Hyundai sedan— on St. Paul Boulevard. When officers attempted to stop the cars, a pursuit ensued.
As the vehicles approached Norton Street, the driver of the Hyundai tried to overtake the Kia but lost control, causing the two cars to collide. The Kia lost a wheel and came to a stop on a curb. The Hyundai continued driving and crossed another curb, sideswiping a 64-year-old man in the process. The victim was taken to the hospital to be treated for back pain.
The drivers of the two vehicles fled the scene, and despite a K9 search in the area, they were not located. However, two juvenile passengers from the Kia were taken into custody. The exact ages of the minors have not been disclosed. Investigators believe both cars were stolen but had not yet been reported as such. Authorities are continuing to work on identifying the drivers and will be following up with the vehicle owners.
