Riverside, CA (November 3, 2024) – A tragic traffic accident occurred early Saturday morning on Wood Road, north of Van Buren Boulevard, resulting in the deaths of two teenagers and serious injuries to another. At approximately 5:40 AM, Riverside Police received multiple calls reporting a crash involving two vehicles.
First responders arrived at the scene to find one of the vehicles, a gray Lexus sedan, engulfed in flames. After extinguishing the fire, authorities discovered two individuals deceased inside the vehicle. Preliminary investigations revealed that three teenagers were in the Lexus at the time of the crash, while the other vehicle involved was a blue Scion, occupied by an adult male.
According to the investigation, the 17-year-old driver of the Lexus was speeding northbound on Wood Road when he ran a red light at the intersection with Van Buren Boulevard. The driver of the Scion, who had the right of way, was crossing eastbound when the collision occurred.
The impact was severe, causing the Lexus to continue northward, striking a cement light pole, a wooden electrical pole, and ultimately a tree before coming to a halt and catching fire. The 17-year-old driver and an 18-year-old female passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. A second 17-year-old male passenger was found with serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.
The adult driver of the Scion was unharmed and remained at the scene, cooperating fully with investigators. The identities of the deceased teenagers are being withheld pending notification of their families by the Coroner’s Office.
“Alcohol and drugs are suspected factors that contributed to this collision, as well as vehicle speed,” Riverside Police stated in a release.
