According to the Richmond Police Department, the crash occurred in the 300 block of West National Road when the bicyclist attempted to cross the road and was hit by a westbound SUV.

The driver of the SUV, identified as an 80-year-old man, remained at the scene and cooperated fully with investigators. The bicyclist sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. His current condition has not been fully disclosed.

The Richmond Police Department’s Crash Investigation Team is investigating the incident and is urging anyone who witnessed the crash or has additional information to contact them at (765) 983-7247.

“We urge pedestrians and bicyclists to cross streets at designated crosswalks and well-lit intersections whenever possible. Bicyclists should also equip their bikes with proper lighting and reflectors to enhance visibility in low-light areas,” said Chief Kyle Weatherly. “Together, through safe and mindful practices, we can reduce risks and ensure a safe and joyous holiday season for everyone.”

Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety

This crash underscores the importance of pedestrian and bicycle safety, especially when crossing busy roads like West National Road. Bicyclists are particularly vulnerable in accidents with motor vehicles, and it’s crucial for both drivers and cyclists to be vigilant.

Richmond Police are continuing their investigation into the incident, reviewing evidence such as witness statements and vehicle damage. They are focusing on the conditions at the time of the crash, including visibility and any contributing factors like speed or distracted driving.

As the investigation progresses, law enforcement will provide more information to help clarify the circumstances of the accident. In the meantime, cyclists are reminded to use designated crosswalks, be visible with proper lighting and reflectors, and exercise caution while navigating city streets, particularly in low-light or evening conditions.

If you or someone you know has been involved in a bicycle or pedestrian accident, it’s crucial to seek immediate medical care and consult with a legal professional to protect your rights and ensure you receive the proper treatment.
