Randolph, VT (November 14, 2024) – A two-vehicle collision Thursday night near The Barn, a well-known landmark on VT Route 66, left one driver hospitalized with injuries. Vermont State Police responded to the crash at approximately 8:54 p.m. when a 2013 Toyota Scion, driven by 62-year-old Stacey Young of Northfield, pulled into the path of an oncoming 2012 Chevrolet Avalanche driven by 25-year-old Kyle Duddie of Randolph.

According to the police report, Young was exiting the parking lot of The Barn and attempted to merge onto the highway when her vehicle collided with the westbound Chevrolet Avalanche. Despite both drivers and their passengers wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, Young sustained moderate injuries and was transported by White River Valley Ambulance to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center for treatment.

Passengers in both vehicles were also wearing seat belts. Cassidy Murdock, 23, a passenger in Young’s vehicle from Montpelier, and Kayla Woodman, 24, a passenger in Duddie’s vehicle from Royalton, were not seriously injured. Unfortunately, both vehicles involved in the crash were totaled in the collision, and the accident caused significant traffic disruption while authorities conducted their investigation.

Our thoughts are with those affected by this crash, especially Stacey Young, as she recovers from her injuries.

Car Accidents in Vermont

This unfortunate crash in Randolph highlights the risks associated with turning onto busy roadways and the importance of caution, even when wearing seat belts. In this case, both the driver and passengers were properly restrained, which likely minimized the severity of injuries, but the collision still resulted in significant damage to both vehicles and required medical attention.

Exiting parking lots, particularly at busy intersections or near landmarks like The Barn, can be dangerous if drivers do not take extra precautions to check for oncoming traffic. This is especially true when merging onto roads like VT Route 66, where high speeds and limited visibility can make it difficult to gauge the safety of a turn.

While the safety belt used in this incident played a key role in preventing more severe injuries, accidents like this one serve as a reminder of the importance of defensive driving. In addition to wearing seat belts, drivers must always be aware of their surroundings, make sure it is safe to merge and avoid rushing into traffic when the path is unclear.

As Vermont’s rural roads and rural intersections pose unique risks, it is essential for all drivers to remain vigilant and take every necessary precaution when driving, particularly at night or in low-visibility conditions.
