Putnam County, MO (February 7, 2025) – A two-vehicle collision on an ice-covered highway early Thursday morning left one person with injuries in Putnam County. The accident occurred around 5:10 AM on Highway E, approximately eight miles east of Powersville.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash involved a 2017 Chevrolet Traverse driven by a 28-year-old woman from Unionville, and a 2020 Dodge Grand Caravan driven by a 45-year-old man from Ottumwa, Iowa. The Chevrolet was traveling westbound when the driver lost control due to icy road conditions. The vehicle crossed the centerline and collided with the eastbound Dodge Grand Caravan.

Both vehicles sustained extensive damage. The Dodge was towed from the scene by Littrell’s Towing, while the Chevrolet was secured at the scene. The driver of the Dodge, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, suffered injuries and was transported by Putnam County Ambulance to Putnam County Memorial Hospital for treatment. The driver of the Chevrolet was not reported to have sustained injuries.

Emergency responders from the Unionville Fire Department and the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, focusing on road conditions and other contributing factors.

Our thoughts are with those affected, and we wish the injured driver a speedy recovery.

Winter Weather and Road Safety in Missouri

Thursday morning’s crash on Highway E highlights the serious dangers posed by winter weather conditions on Missouri roadways. Icy roads, particularly in rural areas like Putnam County, can lead to hazardous driving situations where even the most experienced drivers may struggle to maintain control.

Missouri’s unpredictable winter weather often brings sudden temperature drops, causing roads to become slick with ice, especially in the early morning hours. In this incident, the driver of the Chevrolet Traverse lost control on an ice-covered roadway, a common occurrence during Missouri winters. When a vehicle loses traction, it can easily cross into oncoming traffic, leading to collisions like the one that occurred near Powersville.

The Missouri Department of Transportation recommends that drivers reduce their speed significantly when icy conditions are present and increase following distances to allow for more reaction time. Additionally, it’s important to avoid sudden movements, such as sharp turns or quick braking, which can cause a vehicle to skid. Even though both drivers in this accident were wearing seatbelts, which likely helped reduce the severity of injuries, winter weather still poses a high risk for serious crashes.

For residents in rural areas, staying updated on weather and road conditions before heading out can prevent accidents. If travel is necessary, equipping vehicles with winter tires and emergency supplies can make a significant difference in safety outcomes. Drivers should also remain vigilant and prepared for changing conditions, especially on less-traveled roads where ice may linger longer.
