Prince William, VA (February 6, 2024) – A man was killed, and a woman was seriously injured in a crash on Interstate 95 in northern Virginia on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Virginia State Police, 57-year-old Vernon S. Lee II of Chester was fatally injured when a pickup truck struck his stopped car on the right shoulder of the southbound express lanes near the Triangle interchange. The impact pushed Lee’s car into the guardrail before it was forced back into the travel lanes, facing oncoming traffic.
Lee was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. His passenger, 25-year-old Shannon S. Lee, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities confirmed that she was also wearing a seatbelt.
The driver of the pickup truck, 43-year-old Jeremy S. Kubela of Fredericksburg, was not injured in the crash. He has been charged with reckless driving, and state police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Our thoughts are with the family of Vernon Lee II, and we hope for a full recovery for Shannon Lee.
Shoulder Lane Crashes and Roadside Safety in Virginia
Crashes involving vehicles stopped on the shoulder of a highway, like the recent accident on I-95, often result in severe consequences. Drivers who pull over due to mechanical issues or emergencies are at risk from passing traffic, especially when other motorists fail to yield or maintain safe speeds.
Virginia law requires drivers to move over or slow down when approaching a disabled vehicle or an emergency scene on the roadside. Reckless driving, including failing to notice stopped vehicles, is a serious offense that can result in criminal charges, as seen in this case.
Tragic incidents like this highlight the importance of roadside safety for all motorists. If you must stop on a highway, consider these precautions:
- Pull as far off the road as possible
- Turn on hazard lights to increase visibility
- Remain inside the vehicle if it is safe to do so
- Call for roadside assistance promptly
For those affected by accidents caused by reckless drivers, understanding legal options and seeking appropriate support is essential. If you or a loved one has been injured in a crash, consulting with professionals can help ensure your rights are protected. Drive cautiously and stay aware of roadside hazards to help prevent future tragedies.
