Prince Frederick, MD (February 4, 2025) – A Calvert County Sheriff’s deputy was critically injured following a vehicle collision on North Solomons Island Road Monday evening.
According to officials, the crash occurred just before 6:15 p.m. as crews with Calvert County Fire were responding to a fire along the 1400 block of North Solomons Island Road. Members of the Sheriff’s Department were on-site assisting with traffic control when the accident took place.
Deputy Gavin Shuart had positioned his police-issued vehicle at the intersection of North Solomons Island Road and Buckler Road to enforce a road closure. At that time, an 87-year-old man driving a 2021 Toyota RAV4 northbound on Solomons Island Road struck the deputy’s patrol car.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and transported Deputy Shuart to a trauma center, where he remains in critical condition. The driver of the RAV4 was also hospitalized and listed in critical condition.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
