Portsmouth, NH (February 12, 2025) – A tragic two-vehicle collision in Portsmouth on Saturday resulted in the death of a 70-year-old man from Eliot, Maine. The accident occurred at the intersection of Lafayette Rd and Mirona Rd shortly before 4:15 p.m., drawing a swift response from Portsmouth police and fire departments.
The victim, identified as Judd Reed, was driving a Dodge 1500 pickup truck when he struck the rear of a Toyota Camry in the northbound lanes of Lafayette Rd. Reed was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries, according to a statement released by Portsmouth police on Tuesday.
The driver and passenger of the Toyota Camry sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening. They were also treated at Portsmouth Regional Hospital and are expected to recover.
Authorities shut down the northbound lanes of Lafayette Rd at Mirona Rd for several hours to manage the emergency response and investigation. The Portsmouth Police Drone Team and Crime Scene Team were deployed to document the scene thoroughly. While the investigation remains ongoing, police have indicated that neither reckless driving nor alcohol appear to have been contributing factors in the crash.
Portsmouth police are asking anyone who witnessed the collision to contact Det. T.J. Potter to assist with the investigation.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Judd Reed during this difficult time and wish a swift recovery to the injured parties.
Rear-End Collisions in New Hampshire
Saturday’s fatal accident in Portsmouth highlights the dangers of rear-end collisions, which are among the most common types of traffic accidents in New Hampshire and across the country. While many rear-end crashes result in minor injuries or property damage, some, as seen in this tragic case, can have devastating consequences.
Rear-end collisions often occur due to factors like distracted driving, sudden stops, following too closely, or weather-related conditions that reduce traction and visibility. Even when speed is moderate, the impact of a rear-end crash can cause significant injuries, particularly for occupants of the vehicle that is struck from behind.
In this incident, despite initial findings suggesting that reckless driving or alcohol were not factors, the investigation will likely explore other possible causes such as driver distraction, medical emergencies, or mechanical failure. The thorough documentation by the Portsmouth Police Drone Team and Crime Scene Team reflects the seriousness with which such incidents are treated, especially when they result in fatalities.
For victims and their families, navigating the aftermath of a serious accident can be overwhelming. Beyond dealing with grief or recovery, there may be legal and financial challenges related to medical expenses, insurance claims, and potential legal proceedings.
