Portland, OR (February 20, 2025) – A man lost his life after being struck and dragged by a MAX train in north Portland on Wednesday night.

According to the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, the fatal incident occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. at the Delta Park Transit Station near North Expo Road. The man was reportedly approaching the stopped train from the west side of the tracks and attempted to pass between two train cars just as the train began moving. He became stuck and was dragged before suffering a fatal head injury.

Emergency responders arrived on the scene, but the man succumbed to his injuries, which authorities attributed to blunt-force trauma. Officials have not yet released his identity.

Deputies stated that the death appeared to be accidental. The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office and TriMet officials urge pedestrians and commuters to remain vigilant around MAX trains, use designated crossings, and avoid stepping onto tracks unless at a proper crosswalk.

The incident remains under investigation.

Our thoughts go out to the victim’s loved ones during this difficult time.

Train Accidents in Oregon

Tragic accidents involving trains are not uncommon, particularly in urban transit areas like Portland. Rail systems such as TriMet’s MAX trains operate on strict schedules, and any attempt to cross between train cars or access tracks outside designated pedestrian areas poses extreme risks.

Common causes of train-related fatalities include failure to heed warning signals, distracted walking, and unsafe pedestrian behavior near moving trains. In some cases, a lack of sufficient barriers or inadequate safety measures may contribute to these incidents.

Train accidents often result in severe injuries or fatalities due to the sheer size and weight of the vehicles involved. Families affected by these tragedies may seek answers regarding train operation policies, safety precautions in place, and potential liability.
