Portland, MI (December 6, 2024) – A tragic crash early Friday morning in Ionia County has left one man dead and another facing charges. Deputies from the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office were called to the scene of a single-car accident on East Grand River, near Gregory Road, in Orange Township, just outside the city of Portland.
According to the sheriff’s office, the accident occurred when a pickup truck, carrying five men, was traveling eastbound on East Grand River. The driver, a 27-year-old man from Grand Rapids, reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to run into a ditch and flip at least once. One of the passengers, whose identity has not been released, was rushed to U of M Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, where he was later pronounced dead.
The driver was arrested and charged with moving violation causing death. He is currently being held at the Ionia County Jail. The case has been submitted to the county prosecutor’s office for review. Authorities have confirmed that alcohol and drugs were not factors in the crash, but they believe that speed and the failure to wear seatbelts may have contributed to the severity of the crash.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who tragically lost his life. We also extend our support to those affected by this incident.
