Portland, ME (March 6, 2025) – A tragic house fire early Thursday morning in Portland claimed one life and left four others hospitalized, according to fire officials.
Portland Fire Chief Chad Johnston reported that crews responded to the fire at 11 Olympia St. just after 1 a.m. Upon arrival, firefighters found the single-family home fully engulfed in flames. Due to the severity of the fire and the deteriorating structural integrity of the building, crews were forced to evacuate, and a third alarm was struck at 1:28 a.m.
Five adults were inside the home when the fire broke out. One person sustained fatal injuries, while four others were transported to Maine Medical Center for treatment, including one individual in serious condition.
Additionally, two firefighters sustained injuries while battling the blaze, though they did not require hospitalization. Fire crews worked to bring the fire under control by 4:15 a.m., though emergency personnel remained at the scene for continued monitoring.

House Fires and Fire Safety in Maine
House fires can have devastating consequences, often resulting in serious injuries, fatalities, and significant property damage. In Maine, residential fires commonly occur due to electrical malfunctions, heating equipment failures, or accidental causes.
Fires that spread rapidly, as seen in this Portland incident, can make escape difficult, especially when structural integrity becomes compromised. Fire officials emphasize the importance of working smoke detectors, home evacuation plans, and fire prevention measures to reduce risks.
For families affected by house fires, recovering from the loss of a loved one or dealing with injuries can be overwhelming. Legal and financial resources may be available to help with medical bills, property damage, and other costs associated with fire-related incidents.
