Port St. Lucie, FL (March 8, 2025) – An 87-year-old woman lost her life after crashing her vehicle into a home on SE Woodbine Rd in Port St. Lucie on Thursday afternoon.
According to the Port St. Lucie Police Department (PSLPD), the fatal accident occurred at approximately 3:55 p.m. when Zelpha Watson was behind the wheel of her Toyota Corolla traveling westbound on SE Woodbine Rd. The vehicle came to a stop within a traffic circle at the intersection of SE Veranda Preserve Blvd before suddenly accelerating over the median, onto the shoulder, and through a backyard, ultimately colliding with a home.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and transported Watson to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries to any residents inside the home, and authorities confirmed that the house sustained no structural damage due to the impact.
Investigators are currently working to determine the exact cause of the crash, but preliminary reports suggest that neither speed nor impairment played a role. Officials suspect that Watson may have suffered a medical episode just before the crash.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time.
Medical Emergencies and Driving Safety
Crashes caused by medical emergencies are not uncommon, particularly among elderly drivers. Sudden health issues such as heart attacks, strokes, or loss of consciousness can lead to a driver losing control of their vehicle.
Experts recommend that older adults who experience frequent dizziness, fainting spells, or other medical concerns speak with their doctors before driving. Some preventive measures include:
- Regular health checkups to assess medical conditions that may impair driving
- Avoiding driving when feeling lightheaded or fatigued
- Discussing medications and their side effects with a healthcare provider
- Ensuring that family members are aware of any driving concerns
