Port Barre, LA (February 26, 2025) – A devastating crash involving an 18-wheeler on US Highway 190 left a pregnant woman critically injured and resulted in the tragic loss of her unborn child on Tuesday morning.
According to Louisiana State Police, 51-year-old Albert Jenkins of Lafayette was driving his 18-wheeler southbound on Louisiana Highway 743 when he failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection with US Highway 190. As he turned left onto the highway, his truck moved directly into the path of the pregnant woman’s vehicle, causing a violent collision.
The woman’s car struck the rear of the big rig’s trailer. She was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash but sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Sadly, her unborn child did not survive the trauma of the collision.
Jenkins, who was also wearing a seat belt, was uninjured in the crash. Authorities collected a toxicology sample from him for analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.
The Louisiana State Police continue to review the circumstances surrounding the crash. Our thoughts are with the woman and her family during this difficult time.
Dangers of 18-Wheeler Collisions in Louisiana
Accidents involving 18-wheelers are often catastrophic due to the massive size and weight of commercial trucks compared to passenger vehicles. US Highway 190, a major route for commercial transportation, frequently sees heavy truck traffic, increasing the potential for high-impact collisions when drivers fail to obey traffic signals or misjudge turns.
Intersections where highways meet rural roads, such as Louisiana Highway 743, can be especially dangerous. Failure to stop at stop signs, miscalculating gaps in traffic, and visibility issues are common causes of truck-related crashes. These incidents often result in severe injuries or fatalities, particularly for smaller vehicles involved in the crash.
Victims of commercial truck accidents often face overwhelming medical costs, loss of wages, and emotional trauma. Seeking legal guidance can help injured individuals and their families understand their rights and options for securing compensation.
