Ponchatoula, LA (March 9, 2025) – A Baton Rouge woman lost her life in a two-vehicle crash in Ponchatoula on Friday morning, according to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to the scene just before 7 a.m. at the intersection of Sisters Road and Sontheimer Road. Investigators determined that a U-Haul truck traveling east on Sisters Rd failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with a commercial tank truck heading south on Sontheimer Rd.
The driver of the U-Haul, identified as 28-year-old Alizabeth Scott of Baton Rouge, sustained critical injuries in the crash. She was transported to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries. Authorities confirmed that she was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.
Two passengers in the U-Haul suffered injuries and were also taken to the hospital for treatment. Officials noted that one of the passengers was wearing a seat belt, while the other was not.
The driver and passenger of the commercial tank truck, both of whom were properly restrained, did not sustain injuries in the crash. The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Alizabeth Scott, and we wish the injured passengers a swift recovery.
Intersection Accidents in Louisiana
Intersections, particularly those with stop signs, are common locations for serious crashes. Accidents like the one at Sisters Rd and Sontheimer Rd often occur due to failure to yield, distracted driving, or driver inattention. When vehicles fail to stop at intersections, the risk of severe or fatal injuries increases significantly, especially in crashes involving large commercial vehicles.
Seat belt use remains a critical factor in preventing severe injuries and fatalities in motor vehicle accidents. The Louisiana Department of Transportation emphasizes that properly wearing a seat belt can reduce the risk of fatal injuries in crashes by up to 45%.
For families dealing with the loss of a loved one due to a tragic accident, the emotional and financial burdens can be overwhelming. Funeral costs, medical expenses, and the loss of support can add significant stress during an already difficult time. In cases where negligence is a factor, families may have legal options to seek compensation for their losses.
