Poland, ME (February 18, 2025) – A tragic head-on collision on Bakerstown Rd (Route 11) in Poland resulted in the death of a Maine woman Monday afternoon, according to the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office.
The accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. when 50-year-old Heather Keniston, of South Paris, was driving a Mazda CX-5 along Route 11. Authorities reported that strong winds from Tripp Lake created a snowdrift, which Keniston struck, causing her to lose control of her vehicle. Her car veered into the opposite lane and collided with a Ford F-150 driven by a 70-year-old man from Casco.
Deputies confirmed that Keniston, who was not wearing a seat belt, died from her injuries at the scene. The driver of the Ford F-150 and his passenger were unharmed. Law enforcement officials continue to investigate the crash and are urging motorists to be cautious when driving in hazardous winter conditions.

Head-On Collisions in Maine
Maine’s winter weather creates hazardous driving conditions, particularly on rural roads like Route 11 in Poland. Snowdrifts, black ice, and reduced visibility significantly increase the risk of accidents, especially on open roadways near lakes and bodies of water where wind-driven snow can accumulate.
Head-on crashes are among the most dangerous types of accidents, often leading to severe or fatal injuries. Studies from the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety indicate that road conditions and driver inattention are leading contributors to serious collisions in the state. Officials advise drivers to adjust their speed, use caution in windy or snowy conditions, and always wear seat belts to reduce the risk of injury in an accident.
In fatal crashes, investigations focus on determining contributing factors such as road conditions, vehicle control, and safety measures. Victims’ families may have legal options to seek justice and support after a devastating loss.
