Platte County, MO (February 18, 2025) – A head-on collision on Interstate 29 left two people injured Monday night near mile marker 26.8. The crash occurred at approximately 7:46 p.m., prompting emergency crews to respond to the scene.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the incident began when a northbound 2005 Buick LeSabre, driven by an 80-year-old man from Saint Joseph, MO, veered off the left side of the roadway. The driver then attempted to re-enter the highway but ended up traveling southbound in the northbound lanes. This resulted in a head-on collision with a 2019 Peterbilt tractor-trailer operated by a 44-year-old man from Topeka, KS.
Both the driver of the Buick and his 72-year-old female passenger sustained injuries. NRAD emergency responders transported them to Mosaic Hospital for medical evaluation. The truck driver was not reported injured. Authorities confirmed that all individuals involved were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
The Buick LeSabre sustained total damage, while the Peterbilt tractor-trailer had minor damage. Express Tow removed both vehicles from the scene. The Missouri State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash. Our thoughts are with the injured individuals, and we hope for their full recovery.
Wrong-Way Collisions and Highway Safety in Missouri
Wrong-way crashes are among the most dangerous types of accidents, often resulting in severe injuries or fatalities due to the high-speed impact. While these incidents can happen for various reasons, they are frequently caused by driver confusion, medical conditions, or loss of vehicle control.
Missouri highways, including I-29, are equipped with signage and barriers designed to prevent wrong-way driving. However, drivers should remain extra vigilant, especially at night when visibility is reduced. Motorists are advised to stay in the right lane when possible, watch for headlights approaching in the wrong direction, and report any suspected wrong-way drivers immediately.
For those injured in crashes, seeking medical care is crucial—even for minor injuries, which can worsen over time. Understanding legal rights and available support resources can also be vital in managing recovery and related expenses.
