Plaquemines Parish, LA (January 27, 2025) – A pedestrian was struck and killed on LA 3017 (Engineers Road) near Commerce St on Saturday evening. Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to the incident, which occurred around 7:45 p.m., claiming the life of 69-year-old Jamie Young of Harvey.
According to the preliminary investigation, Young was walking in the southbound lane of LA 3017 while wearing dark clothing when a southbound 1999 Mercedes M-Class SUV struck him. Young sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Mercedes was uninjured and was properly restrained at the time of the collision. Although impairment was not suspected, the driver voluntarily provided a breath sample, which indicated a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of 0.000g%. Authorities have not yet determined if impairment was a factor for Young, with toxicology results pending. The crash remains under investigation.
Our condolences go out to Jamie Young’s family and friends during this difficult time.
Pedestrian Safety Concerns in Louisiana
Pedestrian fatalities, such as the one reported on LA 3017, highlight ongoing safety challenges on Louisiana roadways. Walking at night, particularly in areas without proper lighting or sidewalks, poses significant risks to pedestrians, especially if they are wearing dark clothing, which reduces visibility to drivers.
Drivers are urged to remain vigilant, particularly in poorly lit areas, while pedestrians are encouraged to wear bright or reflective clothing and walk on sidewalks or shoulders when available.
Louisiana law provides recourse for families of pedestrians killed in accidents, allowing them to seek compensation for medical expenses, funeral costs, and emotional distress. Investigations into pedestrian crashes often consider factors such as road conditions, visibility, and the behavior of both drivers and pedestrians.
