Pedestrian Accidents on Highways in Oklahoma
Highway pedestrian accidents are particularly dangerous due to the high speeds and limited reaction time for drivers. When individuals experience vehicle breakdowns on major roads like US-69, the risk of being struck increases significantly, especially when stepping into active traffic lanes.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office, pedestrian fatalities on highways often result from low visibility, driver distraction, or sudden pedestrian movement into traffic. Many of these tragic incidents occur on high-speed roadways where stopping distances are longer, making it difficult for drivers to react in time.
In the event of a breakdown, safety experts recommend staying inside the vehicle if possible, activating hazard lights, and calling for roadside assistance. If exiting the vehicle is necessary, pedestrians should move as far away from the roadway as possible to avoid the risk of being hit.
