Pinellas County, FL (September 26, 2024) – A serious wrong-way crash occurred late Wednesday night, injuring an off-duty Hillsborough County deputy and leading to the arrest of another driver. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident took place just before 10 p.m. on September 25, when troopers received reports of a red Dodge Ram pickup traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Interstate 275, specifically across the Skyway Bridge.

As law enforcement attempted to intervene, the driver of the Dodge evaded a trooper’s PIT maneuver and accelerated at high speed. The situation escalated when the Dodge collided nearly head-on with a Ford F-150 driven by a 33-year-old off-duty sheriff’s deputy near the 17-milepost.

Following the collision, the wrong-way driver fled the scene on foot but was quickly apprehended by St. Petersburg police officers. The off-duty deputy sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

The driver of the Dodge, identified as 25-year-old Yosman Alexander Ixpata Xitumul from Brandon, was found to be impaired, with a blood alcohol level more than three times the legal limit. He was also taken to an area hospital for serious injuries sustained in the crash.

Yosman Alexander Ixpata Xitumul faces multiple charges, including aggravated fleeing to elude, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, leaving the scene with property damage, DUI, DUI with property damage, driving while license suspended, and operating a vehicle without proof of insurance.

Our thoughts are with the injured deputy and all those affected by this unfortunate incident.
