Pine Lake, WI (November 19, 2024) – A head-on collision north of Rhinelander claimed the life of one driver and left another seriously injured on Monday, November 18. The crash occurred around 1 p.m. on Highway 17, just south of the Mud Lake Rd intersection.

According to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, the southbound vehicle, a Honda CR-V, crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a northbound GMC Sierra. Both drivers were the sole occupants of their vehicles. Tragically, the driver of the Honda CR-V was pronounced dead at the scene, while the GMC Sierra’s operator sustained significant injuries. The injured individual was initially transported to Rhinelander Aspirus Hospital and later flown to Wausau for further treatment.

Highway 17 was closed for several hours to allow for a detailed crash reconstruction. The roadway was reopened by 6 PM, with detours provided in the interim: southbound traffic used Cross Country Rd to Pine Lake Rd to County Hwy W, and northbound traffic followed the reverse route.

The emergency response included the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, Pine Lake Fire Department and First Responders, Pelican Fire Department, and First Responders, Rhinelander Medic 1, and Oneida County Ambulances. The crash remains under active investigation.

We offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim.

Head-On Collisions in Wisconsin

Head-on collisions, such as the tragic crash on Highway 17, are among the most severe types of motor vehicle accidents. These incidents often occur on rural highways where lanes are narrow and speeds are higher. Common causes include driver fatigue, distractions, or loss of control, as seen in this accident where one vehicle crossed the centerline.

Emergency services in Wisconsin, particularly in areas like Pine Lake, are well-equipped to respond to such critical incidents, providing immediate care and securing the scene. For families and survivors, however, the aftermath of a collision can bring lasting emotional, physical, and financial burdens.

Efforts to reduce head-on collisions include stricter enforcement of traffic laws, public awareness campaigns, and roadway safety enhancements like rumble strips and improved signage. Drivers are urged to remain vigilant, avoid distractions, and adhere to speed limits, especially on rural roads.
