Pike County, MO (February 18, 2025) – A woman sustained moderate injuries after being struck by a broken utility wire on MO-161 at Pike County Road 404 on Monday afternoon. The incident occurred at approximately 3:26 p.m., prompting emergency responders to the scene.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the situation developed when a 2020 International tractor-trailer, driven by a 51-year-old man from Dyersville, IA, struck a low-hanging wire that had been left down from an earlier crash. The force of the impact caused the wire to break, which then struck a 55-year-old female pedestrian from Bowling Green, MO.
Emergency medical services airlifted the injured woman to Mercy Hospital St. Louis for treatment. Authorities reported that she had been wearing appropriate safety gear at the time of the incident. The truck sustained only minor damage and was able to be driven from the scene.
The Pike County Sheriff’s Department assisted in the response and investigation. Officials continue to assess the circumstances surrounding the incident. Our thoughts are with the injured pedestrian, and we wish her a full recovery.
Unusual Traffic Hazards and Pedestrian Safety in Missouri
Pedestrians face unique risks when near roadways, particularly in areas where accidents or roadway hazards have already occurred. Incidents like this one on MO-161 demonstrate how unexpected dangers—such as downed utility wires—can pose serious threats to those nearby.
Utility line hazards can be especially dangerous, as broken or low-hanging wires may carry electrical currents or create tripping and entanglement risks. Drivers and pedestrians alike are urged to exercise caution in areas affected by previous accidents, construction, or storm damage.
Officials recommend that pedestrians remain vigilant near roadways, avoid walking too close to potential hazards, and always follow instructions from emergency personnel in active crash or repair zones. If encountering downed power lines or other roadway obstructions, it is crucial to report them immediately to authorities.
