Phoenix, AZ (December 16, 2024) – Two people tragically lost their lives, and two others were injured following a head-on crash early Sunday morning in west Phoenix. According to Phoenix police, the collision occurred just after 1:45 a.m. near the intersection of 75th Ave and Indian School Rd.
Emergency responders from Phoenix Fire and Rescue were quick to arrive at the scene, where they found two vehicles with heavy damage. Medics worked tirelessly to assist those suffering from injuries. Unfortunately, two men in the second vehicle, 35-year-old Erick Segura and 37-year-old Alonso Franco, were pronounced dead at the scene. A 16-year-old boy, who was also in the second vehicle, was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the first vehicle, a 28-year-old man, was severely injured and underwent multiple surgeries. Authorities believe that the 28-year-old was driving eastbound on Indian School Rd when he attempted to change lanes to avoid a slower vehicle. He oversteered, crossed into oncoming traffic, and collided head-on with the second vehicle.
The crash remains under investigation as police work to determine the exact cause of the incident.
Head-On Collisions in Arizona
Head-on crashes, like the tragic one in west Phoenix, are among the most dangerous types of accidents. These collisions often result in serious or fatal injuries due to the high speed at which both vehicles are traveling toward each other. Arizona has seen an increase in head-on crashes in recent years, particularly in urban areas with busy roadways and complex intersections.
Many factors contribute to head-on collisions, including driver error, distraction, impaired driving, or poor road conditions. In this case, authorities believe that the driver’s attempt to avoid another car may have played a role in the crash.
Motorists are encouraged to exercise extra caution when driving on busy streets, especially late at night when visibility can be reduced, and fatigue may be a factor. Defensive driving, including maintaining a safe following distance and being alert to changes in traffic flow, is key to preventing such accidents.
