Phelps County, MO (December 14, 2024) – A rear-end collision on I-44 westbound near the 176-mile marker resulted in injuries and significant vehicle damage on Saturday morning. The crash occurred at approximately 11:34 a.m., according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Authorities reported that a 2025 Volvo VNL, driven by a 38-year-old male from Huber Heights, OH, collided with the rear of a 1996 Ford Club Wagon, driven by a 66-year-old male from Coos Bay, OR. Following the impact, the Volvo veered off the left side of the roadway and struck a cable barrier, sustaining moderate damage. Meanwhile, the Ford Club Wagon went off the right side of the road, struck a culvert and a tree, and overturned, resulting in total damage.

The driver of the Ford Club Wagon sustained moderate injuries and was transported by Phelps Health Ambulance to Phelps Health in Rolla for treatment. The driver of the Volvo was reportedly uninjured. Both vehicles were towed from the scene, with D&D handling the Volvo and Dishman’s Towing removing the Club Wagon.

The crash remains under investigation, with assistance from TPR J. N. Rigsby and other responders.

Our thoughts are with the injured driver, and we hope for a full recovery.

Rear-End Collisions on Missouri Highways

Rear-end collisions, like the one on I-44 in Phelps County, can lead to serious consequences, especially when high speeds and large vehicles are involved. These types of crashes often occur due to distracted driving, following too closely, or sudden braking. The aftermath of such collisions, including overturned vehicles, can pose additional dangers to occupants and responders alike.

Missouri’s fault-based insurance system allows injured parties to pursue compensation for medical expenses, vehicle damage, and other losses caused by negligent drivers. However, navigating insurance claims and determining fault can be challenging, particularly in multi-factor accidents.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a rear-end collision, it is essential to take immediate steps toward recovery. Seek medical attention, document the accident, and consult with professionals to protect your rights.
