Pepin Twp, MN (November 11, 2024) – A two-vehicle collision involving a 2021 Hyundai Sonata and a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee occurred on U.S. Highway 61 near milepost 65 late Sunday evening. Emergency responders from Wabasha Police, Fire, and Ambulance services were dispatched to the scene.

The crash happened at approximately 8:26 p.m. as both vehicles traveled northbound on Highway 61 in wet road conditions. The Hyundai Sonata, driven by 20-year-old Josiah Joaquin Willis of Saint Paul, MN, collided with the Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by Michael Paul Ole Midtovne, 44, of Red Wing, MN.

Willis and his passenger, Carlisa Rena Adams, 42, of Houston, TX, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Both were transported to Wabasha Hospital for evaluation and treatment. Both were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, and no alcohol involvement was reported. Midtovne, the driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, was unharmed and also confirmed to have been wearing his seat belt.

The incident remains under investigation by Wabasha County Sheriff’s Office to determine the cause of the collision. Authorities emphasize the importance of cautious driving, particularly during challenging weather conditions.

Our thoughts are with the injured individuals, and we hope for their swift recovery.

Wet Weather Driving Risks in Minnesota

Minnesota’s weather can significantly impact driving conditions, especially during transitional seasons. Wet roads like those reported during the U.S. Highway 61 collision increase stopping distances and reduce vehicle traction, often leading to accidents. According to traffic safety data, weather-related accidents make up nearly 25% of all crashes in the state annually.

Drivers are urged to reduce speed and maintain a safe following distance when roads are wet. Modern vehicles equipped with safety features, such as airbags and advanced braking systems, can reduce the severity of injuries, but proactive measures like attentive driving and maintaining proper vehicle maintenance remain crucial.

If you or a loved one has been injured in an accident caused by hazardous road conditions or another driver’s actions, seeking both medical attention and legal guidance is critical. Understanding your rights can help you navigate the aftermath and secure necessary resources.
