Pemiscot, MO (December 6, 2024) – At 7:30 AM on Friday, a fatal head-on collision occurred on Route U, approximately five miles west of Caruthersville. A 2018 Peterbilt truck, driven by a 65-year-old male from Paragould, AR, was traveling westbound when it collided head-on with a 2017 Nissan Sentra traveling eastbound. The crash caused significant damage to both vehicles, with the Nissan Sentra being towed by Sullivan’s Wrecker and the Peterbilt being towed by Rudi’s Towing.

The driver of the Nissan Sentra, a 79-year-old female from Caruthersville, MO, was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. She sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by Pemiscot County Coroner Brian Irions at 8:14 AM. The driver of the Peterbilt truck was uninjured, but the crash has been classified as a fatality for Troop E, marking the 67th fatality in the area for 2024.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol, assisted by SGT D.L. DeJournett, TPR J.E. Conway, TPR J.P. Lewis, SGT P.G. Sarakas, CVO J.L. Ash, and the Major Crash Investigation Unit Team #4, is continuing its investigation into the cause of the crash.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time.

Fatal Head-On Collisions in Missouri

Head-on collisions are among the most dangerous types of accidents on the road, often resulting in severe or fatal injuries due to the force of the impact. This tragic crash emphasizes the importance of seatbelt use, as the driver of the Nissan Sentra was not wearing one at the time of the collision, which likely contributed to the severity of the injuries.

Driver safety is paramount, and accidents like this underline the need for caution, especially on rural roads where vehicles may cross into oncoming traffic. It is essential for all drivers to remain vigilant, especially when traveling on two-lane roads, and to be aware of their surroundings to avoid such devastating collisions.
