Pembroke, NC (September 28, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred on Thursday evening around 6 p.m. on N.C. Highway 711, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals, all occupants of a single vehicle. The incident unfolded when the car attempted to make a pass on the two-lane road and collided with two other vehicles, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
Initial investigations reveal that the automobile carrying the seven passengers was traveling westbound when it crossed the center line. It sideswiped another westbound vehicle before continuing forward and striking an eastbound vehicle. Following the collision, the car veered off the road, came to a stop at the edge of a swamp, and subsequently caught fire. Reports indicate that three of the passengers in the passing vehicle were ejected during the crash.
All seven passengers were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. As of now, only one passenger has been identified, but authorities have withheld the name pending notification of family members. Preliminary findings suggest that speed may have been a contributing factor in the wreck, although weather conditions do not appear to have played a role.
The driver of the eastbound vehicle involved in the collision was transported to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Meanwhile, the driver of the westbound vehicle did not remain at the scene; however, it has been determined that this motorist did not contribute to the cause of the collision.
