Pelion, SC (October 25, 2024) – A tragic pedestrian accident occurred Thursday evening on U.S. 178, resulting in the death of a 74-year-old man. The incident took place around 7:15 p.m., when the victim, identified as Robert Barrs of Pelion, was struck by three different vehicles.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the accident began when an unknown vehicle traveling west on U.S. 178 collided with Barrs, who was in the roadway and then fled the scene. Shortly after, another unknown vehicle traveling east also struck the pedestrian and left the area. The situation escalated when a Chevy sedan, also heading east on U.S. 178, hit Barrs for a third time.
Despite the efforts of emergency responders, Barrs was pronounced dead at the scene. The circumstances surrounding the accident are currently under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Lexington County Coroner’s Office.
