Pateros, WA (February 23, 2025) – A traffic collision on Highway 97 south of Pateros left two people injured Wednesday morning, prompting emergency response efforts in the area.
According to the Washington State Patrol, the crash occurred at milepost 248 when a southbound 2012 Ford Focus lost control in slushy road conditions. The vehicle, driven by 22-year-old Nicholas Hough of Pateros, spun out, collided with a northbound commercial freight truck, and then struck a guardrail.
The impact severely damaged both vehicles, blocking the highway in both directions. Authorities reported that 20-year-old Bailey Canales of Riverside, a passenger in the Ford Focus, sustained injuries and was transported to Three Rivers Hospital for treatment. Hough was also injured and taken to the hospital for medical care.
A toddler, Preston Hough, was in the car but was unharmed. Emergency responders transported him to the hospital as a precaution.
The driver of the 2025 Freightliner Cascadia, 37-year-old Rene Martin of East Wenatchee, was not injured in the crash. Both vehicles were declared total losses and were towed from the scene.
Authorities determined that excessive speed for the road conditions was the main factor in the collision.
Our thoughts are with those injured, and we wish them a full recovery.
Winter Road Conditions and Accidents in Washington
Slippery road conditions, such as those caused by slush, snow, and ice, significantly increase the risk of accidents on Washington highways. Losing control of a vehicle in hazardous conditions can lead to severe crashes, especially when high speeds are involved. Drivers are urged to reduce their speed and increase their following distance when roads are slick.
Victims of weather-related crashes often suffer from serious injuries, leading to medical expenses, lost wages, and emotional distress. In cases where excessive speed or negligence contributes to a crash, injured individuals may be eligible for compensation under Washington law.
