Pasco, WA (December 23, 2024) – Troopers from the Washington State Patrol (WSP) are investigating a tragic two-car collision that occurred on Sunday morning near the Pasco city limits. The crash happened just before 10 a.m. along westbound Interstate 182 at milepost 11.
According to WSP investigators, the collision took place when one driver attempted to change lanes and struck another vehicle traveling in the same direction. The driver who initiated the lane change, identified as 23-year-old Erika Rojas Barragan, was transported to Kadlec Regional Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead. Authorities confirmed that she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The other driver involved in the collision sustained no injuries, as they were properly restrained by a seatbelt. Their vehicle, however, was significantly damaged. Preliminary investigations indicate that neither drugs nor alcohol were factors in the crash, though the exact cause remains under investigation.
We offer our deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased individual.
Fatal Car Accidents in Washington
Fatal car accidents, such as the recent tragedy on I-182, underscore the critical importance of seatbelt use and cautious driving. Across Washington State, fatal crashes often result from a combination of factors, including driver errors, road conditions, or vehicle safety compliance. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, seatbelt use reduces the risk of fatal injury by 45% in car crashes, emphasizing its role in saving lives.
The Tri-Cities region, including Pasco, experiences a high volume of traffic along its major highways, contributing to potential accident risks. Statewide efforts to promote seatbelt use and enhance road safety have led to significant improvements, but incidents like this serve as reminders of the consequences of even momentary lapses in judgment.
For families affected by fatal accidents, the aftermath is often overwhelming, involving emotional grief, legal complexities, and financial burdens. Accessing the appropriate resources and understanding your rights is a crucial step toward recovery and resolution.
