Pamelia, NY (February 7, 2025) – A woman was hospitalized with serious injuries after being ejected through a sunroof during a rollover crash on Interstate 81 in Jefferson County early Thursday afternoon. The accident occurred when a 2024 Kia, driven by 55-year-old Ahmed Azzam of Ohio, veered off the east side of the highway and overturned, according to New York State Police.
Trooper Jennifer Jiron, a spokesperson for the State Police, reported that Azzam was driving too fast for the conditions at the time of the crash. Meryem Azzam, 25, also from Ohio, was seated in the back of the vehicle and was ejected through the sunroof during the rollover. Authorities confirmed she was not wearing a seatbelt. Meryem was transported to Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown with serious injuries.
Ahmed Azzam and front-seat passenger Asmaa E. Maaroufi, 32, also of Ohio, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Following the incident, Ahmed was issued a speeding ticket, while Meryem received a citation for not wearing a seatbelt.
The State Police are continuing their investigation into the crash. Our thoughts are with those injured in this accident, and we hope for their swift recovery.
Rollover Accidents and Seatbelt Safety in New York
Rollover accidents, like the one that occurred in Pamelia on Interstate 81, are among the most dangerous types of vehicle crashes, often resulting in severe injuries or fatalities. High speeds, especially in less-than-ideal driving conditions, significantly increase the risk of a rollover, as was the case with the Kia involved in this incident.
One of the most critical factors in preventing serious injuries during such accidents is the use of seatbelts. In this crash, the back-seat passenger, Meryem Azzam, was ejected through the sunroof due to not wearing a seatbelt. Ejection from a vehicle dramatically raises the likelihood of life-threatening injuries. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) consistently emphasizes the importance of seatbelt use, noting that they reduce the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passengers by 45% and the risk of moderate-to-critical injury by 50%.
Drivers should always adjust their speed to match road conditions, as excessive speed is a leading contributor to rollover accidents. In winter conditions, wet roads, or areas with sharp turns, slowing down and maintaining proper control is essential for safety.
For those injured in rollover crashes, immediate medical attention is crucial. Even if injuries seem minor, internal trauma or delayed symptoms can arise after such violent events. Legal guidance can also be important, especially in cases involving citations for traffic violations or failure to wear seatbelts.
