Palmyra, ME (November 6, 2024) – A worker was injured Monday afternoon in a construction zone accident on Interstate 95 South near mile marker 157 in Palmyra. The accident occurred around 2:15 p.m. when a tractor-trailer carrying recycled paper collided with a construction vehicle, causing the worker to be thrown from the vehicle.
According to the Maine State Police, the 24-year-old worker from Enfield was setting up cones on the highway for an evening paving project when the incident took place. The impact of the collision led to the worker being ejected from the construction vehicle. Emergency responders quickly arrived, and the injured worker was transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Reports indicate the worker sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Neither the driver of the tractor-trailer nor the operator of the construction vehicle was injured. Authorities closed one lane of I-95 while crews removed the vehicles and conducted an on-site investigation. Maine State Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash to determine if additional safety protocols are necessary.
Our thoughts are with the injured worker, and we wish for his complete recovery.
Construction Zone Safety and Traffic Incidents in Maine
Construction zones on highways like I-95 present heightened risks, especially when large commercial vehicles are involved. The interaction between ongoing roadwork and regular traffic requires careful attention and adherence to safety protocols to prevent incidents like the one that occurred near Palmyra. The presence of cones, barriers, and signage is crucial for protecting workers and directing vehicles safely through construction zones. Despite these precautions, accidents can occur when drivers are distracted, speeding, or unable to stop in time in congested areas.
Maine’s Department of Transportation and state police continuously work to enforce construction zone safety standards. Drivers are reminded of the importance of reducing speed, being vigilant, and following traffic signs when approaching and passing through construction areas. For commercial drivers, adherence to speed regulations and awareness of road conditions is especially critical to preventing collisions with construction vehicles or personnel.
Injured workers in construction accidents may face unique challenges, including medical costs, recovery time, and understanding their rights to compensation and support.
