Pace, FL (March 7, 2025) – A tragic head-on collision on County Road 197A (Woodbine Road) near Oak Tree Lane resulted in the death of a 22-year-old Pace man late Thursday night.
The crash occurred at approximately 9:45 p.m. when a pickup truck, allegedly driven by an intoxicated 33-year-old man, was traveling northbound in the continuous turn lane, attempting to pass other vehicles. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the pickup then swerved into the southbound lane, colliding head-on with a sedan driven by the 22-year-old victim. The impact was severe, and the driver of the sedan was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Witnesses assisted the pickup truck driver and his dog out of the wrecked vehicle, but the suspect fled on foot. Law enforcement officers later located him southeast of the crash site, where he resisted arrest. Deputies deployed a Taser to subdue him.
The driver was transported to Baptist Hospital in Pensacola for treatment before being arrested and booked into Escambia County Jail. Authorities confirmed that he was highly intoxicated at the time of the crash. After initially refusing a blood draw at the hospital, officers obtained a warrant to collect a sample. He now faces charges of DUI manslaughter and leaving the scene of a fatal crash.
Our hearts go out to the family of the victim, and we extend our deepest condolences during this difficult time.
DUI Accidents in Florida
Driving under the influence remains a leading cause of fatal crashes in Florida. Accidents involving impaired drivers often result in severe injuries or fatalities, as impaired motorists struggle with reduced reaction times, impaired judgment, and loss of vehicle control.
Florida law imposes strict penalties for DUI-related offenses, especially when a fatality occurs. DUI manslaughter is a serious charge that can result in lengthy prison sentences, heavy fines, and long-term license suspension.
To prevent these tragic incidents, drivers must plan ahead by designating a sober driver, using ride-sharing services, or finding alternative transportation if they have been drinking. If you or a loved one has been affected by a DUI accident, seeking legal guidance and medical support is crucial.
